Grado, Italy
In the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia you will be able to find the town of Grado. This town which is located on a peninsula by the Adriatic Sea lies between the great cities of Trieste and Venice. During the early days of the town it was a fishing village, this however has changed as has the fortunes of the town. Many people know the town of Grado as L’Isola del Sole or the Sunny Island. While you will find there are many fun activities to take part in while you are here in Grado, many other people choose to come to this town for some rejuvenating spa treatment.
The town was also the birthplace of a famous Italian poet known as Biagio Marin. He was the person who sang about the island in the local Venetian dialect. This town is a place where you can relax and absorb the culture and ambience of the town. You will also find there are plenty of places for you to visit. These will include sights such as the Barbana Sanctuary. You will be able to see the sanctuary located on a small island which lies in the Grado Lagoon.
The sanctuary is the site of an ancient Marin sanctuary which is known as the Santuario di Barbana. The sanctuary was built in 582 by Elia who was the Patriarch of Aquileia. The original church which was built here was placed near to the location of the hut of a hermit by the name of Barbano. It has since been made larger and renovated to prove a fitting home to a small community of Franciscan monks. Another place that you will want to visit while you are staying in Grado is that of the basilica of Santa Maria della Grazie.
The construction of this basilica began during the 4th to the 5th centuries. It was completely renovated during the 6th century and then restored to magnificent Baroque glory during 1640. As you walk in this basilica you will be able to marvel at the beauty of the basilica both on the inside as well as the outside. The history that you will learn from this basilica can be enhanced by a visit to any of the museums that you will find in Grado. For instance if you are interested in learning about the history of underwater archaeology you will find a visit to the National Underwater Museum to be the ideal choice.
Here you will be able to see and learn about how underwater archaeological explorations and excavations are carried out. From the nearby location of Aquileia a sunken shipwreck was discovered not too far back. The excavations which are carried out will reveal the hidden treasures which can be found in the ruined hull of the shipwreck. Another interesting museum in Grado that you may want to visit is that of the Early Christian Museum. Here in this museum you will be able to look at the development of Christianity in Grado and its surrounding region.
With all of these wonderful places to visit you may find that you are somewhat overwhelmed by great choices. Provided that you have left plenty of time for sightseeing you will be able to take in most of the sights of Grado. The others you may have missed will provide you with a great excuse to return back to Grado for another fantastic holiday.
