Lecce, Italy
Lecce Italy is easily recognizable by its warm pink sand stone buildings. This originally Greek town still sports many of the features that were original parts of the towns. Its rich culture will give tourists something to enjoy during their stay.
Lecce was built in the Baroque style, earning it the nickname Florence of the South. This style of architecture can be seen on many important buildings.
The Church of the Holy Cross is a stop that should be on every tourist’s to see list. Construction of this church began in 1353 but then construction ceased for over two hundred years. When construction resumed in 1549 it took another hundred fifty years for the building to be completed. In 1695 the building was finally finished and sports a highly decorated façade. The animals, vegetables, grotesque figure s and a large rose window make this one of the most interesting churches in all of Lecce.
Another ancient church to see is the church of San Niccolo and Cataldo. This church was built in 1180 by the Tancred of Sicily. The façade of the building was rebuilt along with several statues in 1716. The nave has two aisles, an ogival arcade and dome in the center of the nave. The walls have 15th to 17th century frescos on them. The beauty of this church should not be missed.
Another church that should be seen is the Church of Santa Chiara. This church’s construction began in 1429 and was completed in 1438. In 1687 the building was rebuilt and is famous for its paper mache decorated ceiling.
Churches, while popular in Lecce, are not the only sites that should be on your to see list. Erected in 1419 by the eighteen year old prince of Lecce, Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo, the Torre del Park is one considered one of the most important medieval symbols of Lecce. This tower stands more than 23 meters high and is surrounded by a ditch. After Giovanni’s death the Spanish viceroys used it as a residency.
Also an important site is the Castle of Charles V. This trapezoidal building was built in between 1539 to 1549. It is attached to the Politeama Greco Opera House which went into use in 1884.
The Roman Amphitheater is another stop that shouldn’t be missed. Situated near Sant’Oronzo Square this amphitheater originally seated more than twenty-five thousand people. This second century structure is now half-buried due to other monuments that were built above it.
The culture cannot be missed during your visit to Lecce Italy. It’s beauty is timeless and structures unique.
