Mestre, Italy
Mestre Italy, located on the mainland shore of the Venice Lagoon is under the administrative direction of the city of Venice. Known for its metallurgical, glass, chemical and iron industries and is still one of the most important ports in all of Italy. Even though it dates back to the medieval period Mestre is considered to be everything that Venice isn’t, it’s a vibrant modern city with plenty of things for tourists to enjoy.
One of the popular sites to visit is the Torre dell’ Orologio translated to St. Mark’s Clock Tower. This tower houses the most important clock in town. Located in St. Mark’s square the clock tower originally held a clock that was built by Gian Paulo and Gian Carlo Rainieri. This clock was built and installed between 1496 and 1499. This clock has been restored many times, so that now it has nearly been completely replaced. The craftsmanship of the tower and clock are something to be seen during your stay in Mestre.
The Duomo di San Lorenzo is the Catholic parish in Venice. The current building was completed in 1805 and is still being used for worship today. The neoclassical architecture features frescos and bronze panels. The Holy Family by Gaspare adorns the second altar. The bell tower which was constructed in 1513 still maintains a bell that was donated by Saint Charles Borromeo.
One of the things Mestre is most known for though is its night life. Many of the clubs in Mestre are open until midnight or later and they offer plenty of live music. Many of the clubs are also open early in the morning and during the lunch time as restaurants for those who don’t wish to party as hard but still wish to partake of some of the same tasty foods that the partiers get to enjoy.
Being so near to Venice you can always enjoy a day trip to the romantic town if you want to enjoy some of the culture of the Venice area in which Mestre is located. A site to be sure to see when visiting the Venice area is the Basilca of San Marco. This Gothic-Byzantine masterpiece contains many treasures. Some of these treasures include glasses, liturgical vestments and beautiful mosaics. These treasures shouldn’t be missed when you are in the area.
While you are visiting the Venice area you can also make a day trip to the Lido de Jesolo. This beach resort has miles of yellow sandy beaches for you to enjoy. Some fun in the sun could be just what you need after spending time looking at relics and partying till dawn.
Mestre is more modern than Venice but it’s location is close enough to enjoy some of the ancient relics of Venice and the sun of the Beach.
