Porto Cervo, Italy
The Mediterranean Italian seaside resort of Porto Cervo is situated in northern Sardinia and is the second largest city in the Mediterranean, after Sicily. Founded in the 60’s by the Aga Khan, Prince Karim and a consortium of like minds, Porto Cervo is a very young tourist resort that was purpose-built for the entertainment of the higher echelons of the world’s societies but which has of late developed into a flourishing tourist destination for any traveler with a distinctive eye and taste for luxury.
The climate in Porto Cervo is typical of the Mediterranean, with clear skies and sunny days throughout the year with a major concentration of rainfall during the winter and autumn months. The ‘mistral’, the dominant wind blowing from the northwest, has made Porto Cervo famous for its sailing events such as the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which is held yearly. During these days Porto Cervo becomes a hive of activity with magnificent yachts and ships from all over the world converging here to participate in this renowned event. The marina organizes events from fashion shows, to music concerts by international superstars, but perhaps the best time to truly experience what luxury ought to be, is during the DeLuxe event held yearly in the month of June.
If you want something a little different then the Liscia Ruja beach, near the Cala di Volpe, is perhaps the most famous beach of all Porto Cervo; situated in the southerly part of Costa Smeralda Gulf. Liscia Ruja has a large arched bay with fine white sands that gleam with a pale pink glow under the Mediterranean sunshine, and is surrounded by exotic trees such as olive, and juniper. As of recent times, it has also grown popular with kite surfers, windsurfers not to mention families making it a must see for any Porto Cervo bound traveler.
Or you can visit the Pevero Golf Club which is ranked in the top 100 of Europe’s Best Golf Clubs. It was designed in 1967 at the birth of Porto of Cervo, by Richard Bonicatti and opened to the public in 1972. This fine golf club is beautifully landscaped and has the technical characteristics of a fine course - 18 holes, par 72 over an acreage of nearly 4 square miles.
Or perhaps you have a yacht and nowhere to sail it to. In which case, why not pay a visit to the Marina di Porto Cervo, the best of its class anywhere in the Mediterranean. With 700 berths, the marina is a perfect stop for the adventure seeking skipper. Here you will also find fine restaurants such as Leeward, the fisherman, and Cipriani where you can dine on a wide selection of gourmet Italian delicacies.
Luci di la Muntagna overlooks the Porto Cervo Bay and Marina only 250 meters away. Built in typical Sardinian style it is one of the more prestigious resorts in Porto Cervo. The Villa Giulia is another popular bed and breakfast option; situated in the north-east coast of Sardegna. With all this luxury in store for you, you really should make an effort to come to Porto Cervo – you won’t be disappointed.
