Positano, Italy
The town of Positano is a small town which is located on the Amalfi Coast in Campania, Italy. You may hear people talking about this town when they mention the Costiera Amalfitana which is Italian for the Amalfi Coast. The main section of the town sits in an enclosed area of the hills which leads down to the coast. Although the town is quite tiny there are many hidden gems and you will need to take your time to see what you can unearth while you are here.
One such gem that you will discover is that of tiny town of Nocelle. This little town which has been carved into the surrounding mountainside is the perfect place to come and see what everyday life is like in Positano. While you are here you should look at the stunning scenery which is all around you.
Another place that you should see while you are in Positano is that of the Santa Maria Assunta church. This church features a green and yellow dome which is made from Majolica tiles. These tiles are ceramic tiles which were famous during the Renaissance era. The tiles are an opaque, white glaze. The designs which are placed on the tiles have been found in several different colours. Besides this dome you will be able to see a 13th century icon of a black Madonna.
There is a local legend attached to the presence of the Black Madonna icon. Originally the icon was from Byzantium and it had been stolen from that city by pirates. During the trip across the Mediterranean Sea a fierce storm has suddenly blown up over the waters across from the city of Positano.
As the pirates were battling with the storm for control of their ship they heard a voice on board the ship say “Posa, posa!” Posa means put down. Hearing this mysterious voice the by now frightened sailors unloaded the Madonna icon and carried it to the then fishing village of Positano. Once the icon was safely in the town the mysterious storm vanished as suddenly as it arrived.
Of course you will find that while the legend is a wonderful explanation for this icon being here in Positano there are other sights which you should see. These will include the Villa Romana. This Villa is a collection of defense towers which were built around the 16th century. These towers were used as part of the town’s defenses.
While sightseeing can be quite enjoyable, all the climbing up, down and around the city may cause you to want to relax. For this pastime you should think about taking a leisurely stroll among the many plants which can be found in the Positano Botanical Gardens. From these gardens you can then plan on visiting the beaches which are part of the charm of this town. These beaches that you can relax on are the Fornillo, La Porta, Arienzo, Ciumicello and the Spiaggia Grande which can be found near the marina.
So you see while the town of Positano is small there are activities for everyone to indulge in. With all of the climbing and exploring you won’t have to worry about gaining weight unlike on other holidays. The town of Positano will take care of that while you see the hidden treasures of this wonderful little coastal town.
