San Gimignano, Italy
Located in the Tuscany region, San Gimignano’s charming atmosphere and medieval architecture makes it one of the most popular tourist stops in all of Italy.
The first thing tourists will notice about the city of San Gimignano is the lack of cars. While hiking up to San Gimignano is discouraged, the use of cars is prohibited within the city itself. All cars are required to be parked outside the city gates, and guests are encouraged to visit the sites on foot.
San Gimignano is not a city of night life and partying. It is, however, a city for people who enjoy culture and architecture. San Gimignano was originally home to over seventy towers. Thanks to war and modernization most of the towers have been destroyed. The city has retained fourteen of the ancient architectural sites though.
Located in the middle of San Gimignano is the Piazza della Cisterna. This triangular shaped piazza is named for the cistern located in the middle of the piazza. During the medieval times this cistern provided safe clean water for the village people to drink. There are still marks where the chains and ropes drug up jugs of water. This historic square is surrounded by some of San Gimignano’s popular sites: Razzi House, Salvestrini House, Tortoli-Treccani Plaza, Lupe Palace (with the Tower of the Devil), Corseti Palace and Ardinghelli.
Another popular piazza is the Piazza del Duomo. The dominate tourist stop here is the Church of St Maria Assunta. The Church of St Maria Assunta is home to many 14th century Siense and 15th century Florentine paintings. Also located on the Piazza del Duomo are the Twin Towers, Chigi Tower and the Rognasa tower, which serves as the state prison.
Once you’ve viewed the ancient architecture, you can continue your culture tour in one of San Gimignano’s many museums. For those that are interested in sacred art be sure to visit the Sacred Art Museum. This museum contains historic art from the Twelfth to Nineteenth centuries. Most of this art work came from churches in the area.
Another of San Gimignano’s famous museums is the Town Hall located at the Piazza del Duomo. This structure is a work of art all on its own, with one of the largest towers in San Gimignano located there. Inside the Town Hall are paintings by famous artists such as: Masetto, Lippo, Gozzoli, and Marcovaldo.
San Gimignano is home not only to ancient works of art but the city is also known for some of its gastric accomplishments. In 1966 the city’s local wine became the first Italian wine to win the most prestigious Italian recognition for quality. The Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine is still considered one of Italy’s finest white wines today. Visitors can buy this local wine during their visit.
Also grown and produced in the San Gimignano area is olive oil. Thanks to its good soil and favourable climate, San Gimignano produces some of the best olive oil in Italy. This too is also available to visitors during their trip.
San Gimignano is a tiny town filled with culture and atmosphere. A fabulous place to visit.
