Sanremo, Italy
The capital city of the Italian Rivera, San Remo Italy has long been a tourist destination. Once known for being the place where the wealthy summered, San Remo is still a favorite place for fun and nature.
Because of its mild temperatures, lovely gardens, and of course, the casino, often the cultural aspect of San Remo goes unnoticed. There are some historical architectural aspects that shouldn’t be overlooked. La Pigna, also known as the Old City, has tiny streets that wind through the city. Along these streets you can find many restored historic buildings. Each are marked with a plaque for easy identification.
Following the roads in La Pigna will lead you up a hill to the hilltop sanctuary Madonna della Costa Sanctuary. The mosaic cobblestone walkway that leads to the sanctuary dates back to the mid 1600’s while the sanctuary itself wasn’t commissioned until the late 1700s. This beautiful sanctuary is filled with antique paintings, statues, an organ and an ornate altar.
Once you’ve enjoyed the serenity and beauty that is the sanctuary, be sure to explore the Garden of Queen Elena that covers the hill top. This is one of many gardens located in San Remo, giving it the nickname the City of Flowers. For those who don’t wish to trek up the hill to explore the hilltop garden there are several different gardens on the east side of the city. Any of these gardens are an enjoyable site to stop at.
Another historical site that should be stopped at is the Russian Orthodox Church. Built during a time when Russian’s frequented San Remo during the winter months, the Russian Orthodox Church is designed after the Church of San Basilio in Moscow. This site is a testament to Russian influence in San Remo.
Of course, one of the places that San Remo is most famous for is the Casino. This large white palace has many different options for those who love to take a chance. Leave your blue jeans and shorts at the hotel though and bring a black tie. Many of the gaming rooms require that you dress for the occasion. The slot machines in the main halls, however, have no such dress code.
The only thing more famous than the casino is of course, the beaches. San Remo is part of the Italian Rivera and has wonderful temperatures year round. Your family can enjoy a multitude of different outdoor activities while here. There is swimming and other water sports for everyone to enjoy.
San Remo city of flowers, warm and active is a wonderful place to vacation. Don’t let the awesome weather, festivals (including several music festivals) and fun activities overshadow some of the most interesting historical and cultural sites in Italy.
