Turi, Italy

Located mainly on the left bank of the Po River you will find Turin. This city is the home of the ancient Shroud of Turin. It is also home to Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia automobile manufacturers. Sometimes you will hear Turin being referred to as the capital of the Alps. This is due to the close proximity of these mountains to the city. As the city is just a short distance from the Alps it is an ideal base to start your winter vacations. You can choose to stay in the Via Lattea resort before heading back to Turin.

For other times of the year you will find that this city has a wide amount of hotels for you to choose from. These places of accommodation range from budget hotels and hostels, to that of luxury hotels. While you may not find the usual nightclubs and nightlife entertainment here, there is a good choice of entertainment and bars where you can meet some of the locals. The places of interest that you will find when you come to Turin are numerous. For instance if you are interested in history you will find there are some really great museums here. Two examples will be that of the Museum of Oriental Art and that of the Egyptian Museum of Turin. In the Egyptian museum you will see one of the largest collections of Egyptian artifacts outside of Egypt. The museum itself specializes in the Art of Ancient Egypt, Archeology and Anthropology.

The Museum of Orient Art on the other hand houses the most important collection of Asian art in the whole of Italy.

The official symbol of Turin, known to be the Mole Antonelliana, was built to be a Jewish Synagogue. It was never completed. It has now been converted into the National Museum of Cinema. It is believed that this is the tallest museum in the world at a height of 548 feet or 167 meters.

Another structure of interest is that of the Palatine towers. Built during Roman times it served as one of four city gates. The towers remain as one of the best preserved specimens of Roman work. The Turin Cathedral was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The Chapel of the Holy Shroud was later added to the church. This chapel is the current resting place of the Shroud of Turin.

Lovers of automobiles will find a visit to the Museo dell'Automobile well worth their while. Here you will find over 170 different cars from various eras. You will see many examples of how the automobile industry has developed.

Other than museums you will find wonderful examples of how Turin royalty lived, from the numerous castles found here. These castles include the Carignano Palace and the Royal Palace which can be found in the center of Turin. Valentino castle is located within the Valentino Park near the River Po. The Racconigi Castle is yet another palace where Italian Royalty lived while they were in Turin.

As you see there is a wealth of places to see in Turin. In order to gain the most out of a visit here you may need to take a long holiday. This will allow you time to see all that Turin has to offer. With so much to see you may need to come back to Turin many times just to see it all.
