Venice-Lido, Italy

Lido di Venezia is a long sandbar and island located in the Adreatic Sea. The sandbar area is made up of three settlements: Lido (the north most settlement), Malamocco (the middle settlement and oldest settlement) and Alberoni (the southern most settlement). The sandbar and island, where Venice is located, are connected by a lagoon and traveled between the two by boat. There are many enjoyable tourist opportunities in these cities.
About half of the Adriatic side of the Lido sandbar is nothing but sandy beach. The golden sand of the beach slopes gently to the sea. This is a great area for children to enjoy, the water and beach is fairly clean and only occasionally is the fun interrupted by sea life, generally jellyfish. The thing to remember about the beaches, though, a lot of the beach is private beaches for the hotels along the shore. There are public beach areas at the northern and southern tips of the beach. The waters here are protected by the dikes built by every private baths.
For those who want to stay all day at the beach, enjoy the use of one of the beach-huts located on the beaches. These unique huts offer a place for the kids to come in out of the sun and protect your privacy while on the beach. No need for beach umbrellas here.
One of the don’t miss sites in Lido di Venezia is Saint Nicolo. This fortress used to be the largest on the island. The renovated seventeenth century church still stands and visitors can enter into its sanctuary. First built as a church only in the late 1000’s, a monastery was later added. The baroque style tower was added when the building was renovated. This church was the site of many “sea wedding” celebrations that took place on Ascension Day. These celebrations are still held, with decorated boats.
The Forte di Sant’Andrea, or fort of Saint Andrew, faces the port of Saint Nicolo. This fort was built in the mid 1500’s and commemorates the Battle of Lepanto. Its beautiful architecture should be enjoyed during your stay.
Also a must see is a quaint little Hebrew Cemetery. Built in the early 1300’s this cemetery is maintained and is a tranquil place to stop for a visit.
During your stay at Lido di Venezia you can take a boat to the town of Venice. Here you might find things a little more busy and jammed packed but it can make for an interesting day trip during your visit. For those who want to party hard, Venice could be the place. Venice is home to several bars and clubs that can make your stay that much more enjoyable.
With a variety of shops and restaurants to choose from, you can find something to suit everyone’s needs here in Lido di Venzia. Enjoy the sun and surf but don’t forget to check out some of the culture and architecture along the way.
