Kaunas, Lithuania
The city of Kaunas in Lithuania is the second largest city in the country. You will be able to find this city near the confluence of the River Nemunas and Neris. These are two of the largest rivers in the country. The city is also located near the Kaunas Reservoir which is the largest body of water which can be found in the country. This beautiful city has many wonderful sights and traditions to see. As you may wonder where to go hopefully this article should be of some help.
The first thing that you need to understand is that you can come to Kaunas any time of the year as there is plenty to see and do right around the year. However if you are thinking about visiting during the winter months you should make sure that you bring or buy suitable warm clothes. These will help you to weather the cold atmosphere which develops during these months. While you may feel as if you are going to freeze to an icicle you should see the various native inhabitants going about their daily business without a care.
Once you have gotten over the shock of seeing various landmarks in winter you will find that you have a wealth of places to visit right at hand. The first place that you may be interested in visiting is that of the Kaunas Castle. The castle was built in the middle of the 14th Century. It is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Kaunas. This castle is now reopened for visitors to come and marvel at the various sights which can be found in the castle. Near the castle you will find there is well laid out park which overlooks the meeting spot of the Rivers Neris and Nemunas.
For another interesting place to visit while you are in Kaunas is that of the Maironis Museum of Lithuania Literature. The museum is housed in an 18th Century palace. This museum has been arranged as a memorial home of a Lithuanian poet named Maironis. Within the church you will find there are many collections of art works, memorial items, books and manuscripts. Once you have finished looking through the various exhibitions housed here you may be ready for a break.
For this break you may wish to visit a jewelry and gemology museum. This museum of Kaunas can be found between the main Vilniaus Street of the Old Town and the Nemunas River. In this private museum you will be able to look at rare minerals, and various precious gemstones which originated from various places in the world.
Lovers of churches and religious buildings will enjoy coming to see St. Gertrude church. This small sacral building was built in the 15th Century. You can find it in the outskirts of the Old City. This church is a national architectural monument which has been done in the Gothic style.
These are just a few of the many sights that you will find when you come to Kaunas. As this city has many interesting wonders for you to see and explore it is well worth your time to vacation here and see it all.
