Essaouira, Morocco
Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador (this was its old name and these days you might still hear this same dropping from the lips of some of the old natives of Essaouira) is a city found in Morocco.
Essaouira is also in a good geographical location as it is shielded from nature by a natural bay which extends from the harbor south of Essaouira, which is on a stretch of broad sandy beach.
There are fewer of things to do when you are in Essaouira than in other places, but on top of these sights have to be the cafés on the main square. From here you can go to the beaches or watch the fisherman bringing in their catch and relax your mind with the soothing lull of the slower paced day to day life of this delightful fishing port.
Essaouira also has excellent conditions for windsurfing and has become a popular spot for this activity for both locals and visitors alike. Essaouira is also a place notably favored by the likes of Orson Wells and Jimi Hendrix. This tradition continues even in to the present day and these days you can see likes of John Mortimer and Cat Stevens in this delightful little town of Morocco.
There are many festivals in Essaouira and the Gnaoua Festival is one of the highlights. First started in 1998 the festival is all about music of the world and is usually held in the last week of June. It is nice to note that this is one of the festivals that brings together artists from all over the world.
The Gnaoua Festival includes all types of music from rock to jazz; from reggae to hip hop and more besides. This is partly why it has been dubbed as the "Moroccan Woodstock", this and the fact that it captures the attention of over 450,000 spectators the world over.
Culture in Essaouira is many and varied and can been seen by visiting the small art galleries which are found around the town. These are nice to spend a delightful few hours in and can give you a rest from the beaches of Essaouira.
Speaking of which, it really cannot be denied that the beaches in Essaouira are something to behold. With deep blue oceans, and broad sandy beach stretches that are apparently endless Essaouira’s beaches are a definite must see activity. And although they can become very windy, it shouldn’t be forgotten that this aids in the sport of windsurfing.
In fact you will see a number of windsurfers and an equal number of kitesurfers on Essaouira’s waters, and even if you can’t bring yourself to join in the fun, you can at least enjoy yourself by watching this marvelous pastime.
Interestingly, there is also an annual festival of Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in Essaouira. Professional Windsurfers and Kitesurfers from all over the world come to Essaouira to demonstrate their skill and prowess in these arts and if you are in Essaouira at the time of the festival, you should make an effort to go down and watch the action. And if you feel the urge to join in on the fun there are also some schools there which will teach you how to do these activities.
And if all that hasn’t lured you to the shores of Essaouira, maybe the promise of lazy relaxing days spent doing absolutely nothing will do so instead. In Essaouira, you can do everything or nothing at all, and still have the time of your life.
