A good mix of modern and ancient culture, the town of Maastricht is located in the south eastern part of Netherlands. It is this very unique mix of culture and heritage that makes Maastricht a place one must see to believe.
The river Maas flows through the town, nurturing it throughout the year, and the charming ambience of the stone wonders of the town will enthrall you with its architectural marvels. The beauty of ancient monuments in the town is something not to be missed. Exploring these can be accomplished quite easily by taking a walking tour through the city. The antique stone buildings reveal the composite culture and civilizations that prevailed once upon a time in Maastricht.
If you like to be surrounded by peace and quiet then you may wish to spend some time in the serenity and solitude of the St. Petersburg caves. The caves are known far and wide for the lovely and charming cathedrals and churches found there. The caves are intricately carved and present excellent sculpted stone figures for your perusal.
Another not to miss item on your agenda should be a journey along the river Maas. As you sail through the blue waters you will be able to see the magnificence of the city at a leisurely pace, and from a completely different aspect.
Wines are another specialty of Maastricht that you won’t want to miss. You can take sips of wine at the famous wine yards of the city which are pure and delicious, or you might want to visit one of the vineyards such as the 'Apostelhoeve' vineyard, which is another wonderful place to be.
The Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of the Virgin Mary) is a basilica of historical importance. This is an ancient stone structure that dominates the old city center of Maastricht. The amazing tapestries and intricately carved interiors of the church keep the onlookers awestruck. The church is lit by candles during festive days which make it look truly amazing.
On your way, you can visit the Guard house, St. John’s Cathedral and the St. Servatius Basilica. When talking about churches in Maastricht, the first that comes to mind is the St .John’s church. A walk up either one of the two towers will take you to the summit from where you can have a panoramic view of the city.
Festive time in Maastricht is the best time to visit the city, especially during the KunstTour, the European Fine Arts Fair (TEFAF), and the Preuvenemint culinary show every August, as well as the Carnival and the Winterland in the winter time. Getting around Maastricht is not a big problem as there are roadways, railways, waterways and airways making it a thoroughly comfortable journey for you and your family.
If you enjoy shopping, or just want to find a few knickknacks to take back home, then you might want to take a look around the main Vrijthof Square in Maastricht. This market is full of little things for you to buy, and it will be a wonder indeed if you don’t come away from there with at least something in your hands!
It cannot be denied that Maastricht is not the usual tourist haunt, nor is it a place that has sun, sand and sea as is much in demand these days. However, the beauty and the culture of Maastricht is such that if you make one visit here, you will want to come back again and again.
