Noordwijk aan Zee, Netherlands

Noordwijk aan Zee is a village in the western Netherlands and is part of the municipality of Noordwijk. This area of Noordwijk is separated from Noordwijk-Binnen by a green belt. Noordwijk aan Zee was founded in the 1200s as a fishing village and was still mainly a fishing village until the first part of the 1800s.

The big draw to Noordwijk aan Zee is the beaches. With its sandy beaches it is no wonder people come to sit in the sun and enjoy the beautiful blue waters. Noordwijk aan Zee sports several beaches that can be enjoyed just about year round. Come for the sun in the spring and summer and enjoy the wonderful sea air in the fall and winter.

There are a few things that visitors should know about the beaches. The Noordwijk aan Zee beaches have been labeled as blue flag beaches. This means they are clean, environmentally friendly and safe swimming areas. These are first-rate beaches. During the summer months there are life guards on duty and please head their instructions and do not swim on the outgoing tides, it is much too dangerous. Also barbeques and fast vessels such as jet skis are prohibited from the beaches. There are areas where, if you please, you can ride horses signs are posted for your convenience. Also dogs aren’t allowed on the beach during the summer months. There are some dog beaches for you to take them on; these are posted so you can find them. For those who like the “clothing optional” option there are two nudist beaches located towards the north of the village.

If you bore of the coast line there is plenty of nearby attractions for you to enjoy. Nearby Leiden has a historical town center for you to stroll through and enjoy. There is also a boat tour on the Kager Lakes. Leiden is home to many museums as well.
