When you think of the Netherlands, most people only know Amsterdam. And even though it is only a small country, the Netherlands has much more to offer. One of the bigger cities is Rotterdam. It is known for its port which is the largest in Europe. The harbor functions as an important transit point and from the port goods are transported by ship, train or road.
The city has been rebuilt completely after it was bombed in the Second World War. The bombing destroyed almost everything, only the City Hall was still standing. A statue called “Stad zonder hart” which means “City without a heart” made by Ossip Zadkine was a tribute to the event. You can find it in the Leuvehaven, not far from the city centre.
If you are visiting the city centre, you can take a number of routes, with or without guides. You can choose between one of the routes to see the city, or take the 'Shopping in Rotterdam' tour. This last one will take you to the best shops in town and you will surely arrive home with perfect souvenirs. Also, Rotterdam is known as one of the bigger fashion cities of the world and a lot of designers have their shops located in the city centre. Other tours will show you the famous architecture and skyline, and the most important sites in the city.
Cultural events are a big part of Rotterdam. One of the things you must visit is the Kunsthal. Here you will find all sorts of cultural activities, expositions and other things to see and do. For instance, you can visit the exposition “Made in Holland” to see Dutch inventions or “Ode to women”, statues made by Erwin de Vries. You can also go see a musical regularly or visit “KunsthalKOOKT” a regular event which is all about cooking, flavours and scents.
De Kuip is where Feyenoord, one of the biggest Dutch soccer clubs plays their matches and regularly you are also able to go to concerts and events. Tours are offered to see this massive building and a guide can tell you all about its history.
Taking a family vacation here is a very good option. For the kids, there is the Museum of Customs and Taxes where they will be able to learn in an exciting way. They will be able to witness a smuggling attempt and there are a lot more surprises for them waiting at this museum.
In the Fairytale Theatre (Sprookjestheater) kids will be able to watch fun puppet shows. New shows are available regularly and all fairytales are featured at one point. These shows are fun for children of all ages.
At night you can visit one of the many bars in the city centre. There are all kinds of places you can visit like Eau Lounge, a lounge and cocktail bar, Club Elite where you can enjoy a drink while listening to Jazz or Rotown where you can rock out to live bands.
Most of the restaurants are also located in the city centre where you can get dishes from all over the world. One of the best is 'de Tuin' which is located in a beautiful historical building. On the China Boat you can enjoy great Chinese food while taking a trip over the rivers in Rotterdam. Of course, you can also find many restaurants with traditional Dutch dishes like 'hutspot', 'zuurkool' or the one dish that is very popular amongst the Dutch, 'patatje met' (fries with mayonnaise).
This city is one of the most exciting places in the Netherlands, offering all kinds of activities and places to go, Rotterdam is certainly worth your time. It is easy to travel to other cities which are located nearby, like Amsterdam. Because it is close to the sea there are a number of beaches where you can drive to within less then an hour and public transport is well taken care of. This city is an excellent opportunity to have a great trip as a family, a couple or on your own.
