Scheveningen, Netherlands

Netherlands, also known as Holland, is located on the northwestern part of Europe. The country is also sub-divided into water districts, 27 to be exact, with the city of Hague, also known as Den Haag, divided into 8 districts one of which is Scheveningen.

Scheveningen (also a sub district of Wikjen) is a modern resort town as well as one of the major tourist attractions in the area. It also has a beach area in which you can relax in, and if your tastes run to it Scheveningen beach also has a nudist section about 1km down from the main beach area. The beach however, is most famous for the water sports available such as the windsurfing and kiteboarding. Another major attraction in Scheveningen is the harbor which is used for both fishing as well as for shipping, the esplanade, and the lighthouse.

There are many sights to see in and around Scheveningen and if you are interested, you can visit the Sea Museum, where you can spend a delightful couple of hours pottering around. There is also a miniature of the city of Madurodam which is quite interesting to inspect. If you like this sort of thing, you can also take a visit to the sculpture museum, Beeldun aan Zee where you can take a walk around looking at the different sculptures on display.

The pier which is a must-go when in Scheveningen has two decks, the upper one of which is open to the elements while the lower one is enclosed. Another sight not to be missed is the Panorama Mesdag. It is found in a purpose built museum in The Hague, and is a cylindrical painting that spans a 120 metre circumference (what this means that the painting is a continuous one running along the inside length of the circular building). An observation gallery in the room’s centre allows the visitor to believe that they are standing on a sand dune looking down upon the sea and the sandy beaches.

Besides these sights, Scheveningen also offers up a host of annual events such as the Winter Swim, Flags Day in spring, and the annual fireworks displays held in summer.

The Winter Swim is a swimming event held in winter and occurs on Nieuwjaarsduik or New Year’s Day. Surprisingly a lot of people participate in this daylong event and even if you can’t be tempted to join in, you will find it entertaining to watch and participate in the peripheral activities.

Fireworks displays also take place in summer, about once every week and more for when there are festivals and special occasions going on. Flags Day, is interestingly enough, when the first new herring of Spring is auctioned off. As you can imagine with a theme like that, it is a fun filled day.

Although you might find brighter spots in which to vacation, you can be assured that you will be hard pressed to find more interesting places to visit than Scheveningen. So why not come and experience all that Scheveningen has to offer, for yourself.
