With a name that is nearly unpronounceable to the average English speaking tourist, Valkenburg aan de Geul in Netherlands is not necessarily a place that many people would think about going to for their vacation. However, you will find that there is a host of things to do while you are in this charming town, ranging from exciting and thought provoking tours down a coal mine, to visiting a castle ruins situated atop a hill.
Where to begin though? With so many things to see and do, and so much of Valkenburg aan de Geul’s surrounding countryside to explore it can be difficult to choose from all the options. In this case, why not start with an exhilarating tour of the former marl quarries? These municipal caves are a great treat for the whole family.
This labyrinth of caves were created when the Romans excavated the site for marl for use in constructing their buildings. However, there is more to be found here than just Roman relics and artifacts, as the rock walls of the caves showcase layers of ancient fossils and shells embedded within it.
Surprisingly enough there is also a large amount of art depicted on these walls. In fact, some of the art found below the surface in these caves is simply stunning and must be seen.
Once you have explored the municipal caves of Valkenburg aan de Geul you might want to head on over to the castle ruins perched atop a hillside. Long since destroyed in 1672, the castle was never rebuilt and has stood solitary upon the hilltop keeping watch over the fortress town sprawling out below it.
Not much of the castle stands today – it is after all a ruin – but you can still get a good look at the artillery room, the dungeon, the old chapel, and even the Great Hall while you are here.
If you enjoyed taking a tour of the municipal caves there is every chance you would enjoy a tour through the system of caves closely associated with castle, known as the Velvet Cave. These caves were also mined for marl but were established more recently, in the 11th or 12th century.
One of the interesting features of these caves is that the temperature doesn’t vary no matter what day of year it is, nor what season. It stays at a steady 120C (530F ) at all times. Besides this interesting fact, you will also find that the extensive labyrinth of caves was used during times of trouble and strife by the castle knights in days of yore to either ambush the attacking foes from behind, or to bring in supplies when the castle was being held under siege.
If you find all of the culture and underground exploring has gotten to you, you might want to try out the Thermae 2000 spa and treat yourself to a bit of pampering. You can enjoy a stay at the four-star hotel while you benefit from the healthy waters.
With such a wealth of things to do in Valkenburg aan de Geul it is no wonder really that it makes for the perfect getaway spot. What is surprising however is that so many people overlook this little gem when planning their holiday.
