Zandvoort, Netherlands
Located next to the sea and in the busy and modern part of the Netherlands, you find Zandvoort. Within the Netherlands it is well known for its excellent racing circuit, Circuit Park Zandvoort. It is one of the biggest and most popular beach towns of the country. The city centre has a lot of narrow streets and small houses where you can also find some great shops.
The long beach is bordered by dunes and numerous little restaurants, bars and hotels are located close where you have a stunning view at the sea. The city even has a private nudist beach with two private bars / restaurants. During the summer the weather is nice and warm, and the water is usually the perfect temperature for a nice day of swimming, tanning and walking at the beach. Since 2005 the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag which represents clean and safe beaches.
There is also enough room for activity, there are several spots suitable for kite surfing and you can take lessons on the beach. The places that are available are carefully monitored to make sure visitors can enjoy every aspect of the beach in a safe way.
The winters are colder but are excellent for refreshing walks and give a great opportunity to explore the city and the towns surrounding it.
There are two local museums, the main one being the Zandvoorts Museum. Here you can view exhibits of everything regarding the city. From the traditional clothing to modern photography. At the museum is a special department representing the history of Zandvoort. Here you can see how it transformed from a small fish town to a modern beach resort.
The Juttersmu-Zee-um is smaller and has an ongoing exhibit of all the items and object found at the beach over the years. Of course, the collection keeps growing as more items wash ashore. You will find all sorts of interesting things, from parts of wrecked ships to the most curious unidentifiable objects.
During the summer season the shops in the city centre are opened seven days a week. The bigger streets have all the main and also exclusive shops you need while the smaller streets are home to the interesting, funny and sometimes curious shops. These little shops are excellent places to find unique souvenirs and must-haves.
Also located in the city centre you will find a number of great restaurants with both local and international dishes. The Netherlands are famous for their Herring, a fish they eat raw with chips of onion. Most Dutch dishes are set up with potatoes, vegetables and meat or fish, which is all made following traditional recipes.
At night you can visit a large number of bars, clubs and cafes located both in the city centre and at the beach. From loud live music to lounge bars, they are all represented here. Zandvoort was the first city in the Netherlands that was allowed to have a casino. Visiting the casino is worth your while, as it was completely rebuilt in 2005.
When visiting the Netherlands this is certainly a city you do not want to miss. It is easy to travel from here to the bigger cities like Amsterdam because the roads and public transportation are well taken care of. Zandvoort is one of those towns that breathes local culture and here you will really get to know the Dutch ways.
