Sopot, Poland

When thinking of Europe, Poland may not be one of the first countries you think of. In fact, Europe has a lot of countries that do not come to mind often as vacation spots, yet a great amount of cities located there are wonderful places to visit, and Sopot is one of those places. In fact, this seaside town is one of the best.

Located at the Bay of Gdansk, the city is home to the longest pier in Europe. Here you can take an amazing walk, as the pier stretches from the beach into the sea. It is also known for the healthy environment and many people come here for health walks. You can heal from the air which has a high concentration of iodine at the sea end of the pier. The pier is also a regular location for events and you can hire a water taxi or depart for a cruise from here.

One of the cruises offered is the Pirate Cruise. Targeted at both families and adults, this cruise will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pirates will take you out on the sea and while on the trip you will live like a pirate. On board you can get a good pirate meal and the ship also offers opportunities to rent for special occasions.

Over 60 percent of the town is covered with greenery and the character created by the wooded hills, the townhouses and the Bay of Gdansk is unique. You can enjoy a number of historic parks and cultivated gardens, and activities like horseback riding are also available.

Located near Sopot is the city Gdansk. It has a rich history and there are many historical sights and cultural facilities you can visit. It has been home to many great artists. One of the things you can enjoy while visiting is the Gdansk-Oliwa Zoo. It is one of the largest zoos in Poland and you will be able to see hippos, kangaroos, penguins, apes and much more. It is known as one of Eastern Europe's better zoos and will be a great day out for anyone.

When going into town you certainly do not want to miss the Krzywy Dom. It is a fairytale-like building which, at first, makes you stop and wonder if you are hallucinating. Its unique architecture dazzles your perception. Inside the Dom you will find a number of shops, restaurants and bars. At night you can visit a variety of bars and pubs, from a stylish cocktail bar to a sports bar where you can watch games live.

Sopot is well known for the annual Sopot International Song Festival, which is the second largest song contest in Europe. It takes place in the Forest Opera where over 4000 seats are available, and offers all kinds of music genres live on stage. Many great artists have performed here, like Whitney Houston, Elton John, Katie Melua, Kim Wilde and Sister Sledge. In august of 2011 the Festival will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Visiting Sopot when going on vacation will give you much more then you initially expected. It will be a great opportunity to visit a place that, while it might not be world-famous and a well-known tourist spot, is an experience of a entirely different nature. People who are looking for an adventurous, exciting and unique vacation will feel like home here.
