Warsaw, Poland
The capital city of Poland is Warsaw. This is a city which lies equidistance from two natural boundaries. On one side you will encounter the Baltic Sea on the north and on the southern side you have the Carpathian Mountains. The city is located near the Vistula River. Since there are four different times of the year when you can visit Warsaw you should make sure that you take the weather into account when you are planning your trip and pack accordingly especially during the winter months as it can get very cold.
Of the various sights that you can visit you will find the Kabaty forest to be of great interest. The Royal Castle and Jesuit Church which are located in the Old Town are structures which should allow you to see the different periods of change in the country. The Warsaw Zoo traces its history back to the 17th Century.
Other places that you can find are the Muzeum Gazownictwa, and the Warsaw Rising Museum. In this museum you will find the history of insurgents and the years following the World War II displayed in multimedia format. The numerous cemeteries which are also found with the city limits will also provide you with a glimpse into the past of Warsaw. As there are many of these cemeteries you might want to look at only a few. Of particular interest will be the Jewish Cemetery. Here you will find notable Jewish people like Janusz Korczak who died in a concentration camp.
Yet another cemetery to visit will be that of the Lutheran Cemetery where you will find famous tombs of people like Leopold Kronenberg, Stefan Żeromski and Anna German to name but a few. Before you get too depressed by the sight of so many cemeteries however, you may want to see some of the other sights in Warsaw. These will include the Saint Katherine Church which is a monument to the victims of the Communist Terror.
As part of the National Museum, Królikarnia will hold your attention as the palace is built on a slope. The Palm Tree which is located at the intersection of Al. Jerozolimskie and ul. Nowy Świat is of interest due to the fact that it is the only palm tree which has its very own website. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument which pays tribute to the various Polish soldiers who died in numerous wars in which Poland took part.
Additionally you may like to see the numerous religious buildings which dot the landscape of Warsaw. This includes the Nożyk Synagogue. This is the only Orthodox Jewish Synagogue in Warsaw that is still open for devotees. The Jesuit Church which looks large from the outside has a small modest worshipping hall on the inside.
These are not the only things of interest that you will find when you visit Warsaw. The various parks like Saski Garden and Ujazdów Park are great places to relax after a day spent sightseeing. Shopping and dining in Warsaw is another way to pass the time in the city. There are interesting little shops where you can buy gifts for your loved ones at relatively inexpensive prices.
As you see this little city has many things to offer visitors. From the numerous parks, cultural sights, shopping, hotels, and dining to be found in Warsaw you will find that it is a wonderful city in which to spend time in. The next time you are planning a European holiday you might want to make Warsaw one of your prime destinations and enjoy a holiday with a difference.
