Wrocław, Poland

Wroclaw is the capital of Lower Silesian Voivodeship with a population of 635,280 as of 2006. It is not the largest city in Poland but comes in a close fourth place. As with all of Poland, Wroclaw is a predominantly Catholic city and is a very important city as far as the historical significance of south-western Poland. It's beauty, historical significance and its buzzing tourist industry has Wroclaw among the newest tourist hot spots in recent times.

More than this though is the amazing beauty of the city with it's series of islands and bridges which connect the city. It is often called the Venice of Poland. Wroclaw is home to variety of unique architectural styles including Bohemian, Austrian, Silesian Gothic and Baroque styles. Visitors to Wroclaw are treated to some of the most stunning German Modernist designs along with some incredible historic buildings including Centennial Hall which was built in 1913 based on a design by Max Berg. If you're thinking about a vacation this might be just the place for you. If beauty, culture and rich history is something that you are looking for in a vacation you have found it in Wroclaw. With its incredible market square and its small town feel this is the ideal destination for people who are looking to get away.

Wroclaw is situated along side the Odra river which helps it rank among the warmest cities in Poland as it is in the southern Silesian region. The average temperature over the course of a year is 9.1 degrees Celsius. The temperature rarely fluctuates more than 20 degrees all year with the warmest day typically being 19 degrees and the coldest being just below 0. Making it hospitable for tourists all year long.

For tourists and residents alike Wroclaw is home to a variety of cafe's and quaint restaurants and luxurious hotels. The busy small town is rapidly becoming a favourite among those meeting for business as well as adults looking for a unique vacation spot. The city is growing quickly and is thought to be the meeting place of Poland for its abundance of hotels and restaurants. Wroclaw is also home to a number of taxi companies that are available 24 hours a day to assist tourists and residents with getting around the city. If you call your cab on the phone it can save you 5-30% over hailing a cab on the street, so keep that in mind when you're on your vacation.

The Wroclaw airport is located 13 Km west of the city's downtown. The airport is the former German airbase. You can fly from Wroclaw to a number of international locations today including but not limited to Cologne, Warsaw, Stockholm, Munich, and Dortmund. As with everything else in the city the airport has a small town feel but it did become and international airport in 1990.

Poland like many other countries these days is not over friendly about paying using a cheque, but they do accept all major credit cards. They are set to begin using the Euro by end of 2009 but it would hurt to have some of their local currency on hand; in Wroclaw they use the Zloty, often called golden, or gold ones.
