Alicante, Spain
When you are thinking about holidays spent in the sun you might want to visit sunny Alicante. This lovely city is quite well known throughout Spain and is famous for its beaches, shopping and interesting places to visit. You will find the city of Alicante in the Costa Blanca area of the Alicante region.
When you visit Alicante you will find there are some places of interest that you can look at. These will include attractions like the Castle of Santa Barbara. This castle is located at the top of Mount Benacantil. This castle is considered to be one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. It was built by the Muslims who lived here in Alicante during the 9th century. When you look around from this castle you will be able to see a fantastic panorama of the harbor and the town itself.
Another area of interest in Alicante is that of the Old Town. This “town” is a triangular area which is surrounded by Mount Benacantil, Rambla de Méndez Núnez and Explanada de Espanya. The Old town area is quite a friendly place to visit. Providing that you don’t become lost in this part of town you will find a stroll along the narrow streets to be a treat. In the Old Town of Alicante you will find an old covent, the town hall, several art museums including that of the main contemporary art museum and a cathedral.
In addition to these sights in Alicante you might like to visit the basilica of Santa Maria. This cathedral was built between the 14th and the16th centuries. The original building that was built here was a mosque.
The architecture style of this basilica is that of the Gothic style. Additionally you will find that the high altar was made in the Rococo style and the entrance portal was designed in the Baroque style. These last two style additions were added during the 18th century. Another cathedral in Alicante which was also built over a mosque is that of the Co-cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari. This cathedral was built during the 15th to 18th centuries.
One of the places that you should think about visiting while you are here in Alicante is that of the Baroque Casa de La Asegurada. This building was constructed in 1685 and it is considered to be the most ancient civil building in the city of Alicante. Today you can wander around this building as it is the museum which houses contemporary art in the city. You will find abstract paintings by many major Spanish artists from the 1950s. There are also masterpieces from masters like Miro, Picasso and Gris.
Once you have done the sights you may enjoy a light stroll along the palm fringed seafront promenade known as Paseo de la Explanada. This beautiful promenade is inlaid with black, red and cream colored marble. Along the route you will find many wonderful street cafes where you can enjoy a snack or something to drink. The music pavilion is also located there and you can enjoy a free outdoor concert next to the sea.
To learn more about this city and its wonders you should think about coming here in person. There is so much to see and do while you are in Alicante that you will not regret spending your precious holiday time here.
