Playa Blanca, Spain

Playa Blanca resort is situated on the southerly tip of the Spanish controlled Island of Lanzarote and is about 37 kilometers from the capital Arrecife. Historically speaking it is believed that in 1400, the Spaniards began their stronghold on the Canary Islands from right here building the Castillo de las Coloradas in 1769. Although in early times Playa Blanca used to be a small fishing village, it quickly emerged into a fast growing holiday destination and is considered to be a resort for both families as well as couples seeking a holiday getaway for relaxation.

Playa Blanca has cultural fiestas throughout the year such as the marking of the Eucharist or Corpus Christi every 10th June where the people create intricate carpets made out of flowers or dyed salt. Also the Festival de San Juan, patron saint of Haria, a fiesta celebrated to mark the coming of the summer solstice is observed throughout the island, an excellent time to be part of Playa Blanca’s atmosphere. In addition, you really shouldn’t miss the Nuestra Senora del Carmen fiesta observed in honor of ‘the Lady of the Sea’ which is held yearly on the 16th of July.

Playa Blanca boasts of the highest temperatures on the island and is also home to the well known Papagayo Beaches; a collection of smaller beaches in seclusion within sheltered bays, known for their turquoise waters and natural beauty. Because it is located in the South of Lanzarote between Atalaya de Femes and Montana Roja, Playa Blanca generally receives less wind than the rest of the island making it unsuitable for year round wind and kite surfers, but perfect for sun bathing and swimming.

For a laid back holiday experience, take a load off after tanning in the sun in one of the many bars, pubs and restaurants such as the Inn Plaice or La Bocaina. Much quieter than other resorts in the Island, let the live ‘charanga’ music from evening entertainment at Punta Limones serenade you throughout the night. But if rich Creole music is what you seek, than a trip to La Avendida Maritima will be well spent. Finish off with a night cap of fine Spanish wine at the award winning La Casa Roja restaurant and you will be well served.

While here you should also remember to take a trip to the Timanfaya National Park a site containing a volcanic mountain which nearly devastated the island in 1730 with an eruption lasting 6 years. Near the Park at Islote de Hilario are the artificial Geysers, a must see experience for everyone

The beautiful 500 berth marina of Playa Blanca which was completed in 2000, is not only home to expensive yachts, but it also has plenty of activities for the adventurous. There is jet skiing, snorkeling, deep sea diving, and even tutoring packages on how to captain your own yacht!

As you can see there is quite a lot to see and do while in Playa Blanca, and although it might not be on the beaten path, sometimes you will find that traveling off the beaten path, even just a little bit, can yield surprisingly good results.
