Playa de las Americas, Spain
One of the world’s best man made resorts can be found in the south of Tenerife. This resort has many hotels and beaches where you will find holiday makers enjoying themselves. While having fun in the sun is the main reason for its popularity, there are some other activities that you can find to do when you visit Playa de las Americas. The first thing you do need to understand is that since this resort has been built expressly for the purpose of relaxing and you will not find any cultural monuments or ancient sights.
Nonetheless you will see some interesting places if you leave the crowded beaches of Playa de las Americas. You can take a day trip to the nearby village of Masca. At one time this charming little village was thought to be the hideout of pirates. Today while you will not encounter any pirates in Playa de las Americas, you will find a path which leads down to the sea by the cliffs of Los Giganates.
Another place of interest that you will be able to find in Playa de las Americas is that of the Teide National Park. In this park you will discover some spectacular scenes as the landscape of the park is truly impressive. You can look at a volcanic crater which is 30 miles in circumference and from this crater you will see one of Spain’s highest peaks rising above you. This peak is called Mount Teide. While you are in the park you have a choice of riding a cable car to the summit of Mount Teide or you can hike through the park.
This latter option will provide you with the chance of seeing the flora and fauna of Teide National Park. Once you have experienced the beauty of this national park you can visit the Pirámides de Güímar which can be found on the east coast of Tenerife, south of Santa Cruz. Here you will be able to see six pyramids whose true purpose remains a mystery to many scientists. An anthropologist by the name of Thor Heyerdahl was of the opinion that these six pyramids had the same purpose as the ones that were constructed in Peru, ancient Mesopotamia, and Mexico.
The whole of this area is now enclosed in an Ethnographic Park. Within the park area you will be able to view a full sized replica of Mr. Heyerdahl’s reed boat the Kontiki and look at artifacts in the museum. You can buy gifts and souvenirs from the souvenir shop located within the park area. To quench your thirst or hunger there is also a cafeteria.
Once you have checked out these locations head back to Playa de las Americas to see about the other activities to be had on the waters around the resort. You can look into hiring a boat to take you big game fishing. As the waters around the Canary Islands are well known for its big game fishing you will have a good choice of companies to choose from. You can try your hand at catching hammerhead sharks, white marlins, blue marlins, yellow fin tuna and other varieties of fish.
On the other hand if fishing is not your thing then you will find there are boat services in Playa de las Americas that you can hire to take you sightseeing. On these trips you can see some spectacular wildlife like whales and sometimes dolphins. For the most part you will see the dolphins as they swim next to the boat.
All in all while Playa de las Americas has the reputation for being a resort where beach lounging and clubbing is the rage you will find that there is also another side to this resort. Once you have left the hustle and bustle that is in the resort you can enjoy the hidden beauty of Playa de las Americas and Tenerife.
