Salou, Spain

Salou in Spain is a seaside resort and a major tourist centre in Catalonia, close to the Costa Daurada and about 100 Kilometres from the centre of Barcelona. It offers a string of beaches and rocky coves and the famous Port Aventura complex that was previously owned by the Universal Studios.

PortAventura is a theme park in Portaventura and is an hour away from Barcelona and was built as a joint venture by the Tussauds group, the Anheuser Busch, and the Universal Studios company, but was later mostly owned solely by the Universal Studios company and renamed Universal's Port Aventura and two hotels and a water park, but was sold again in 2004 to the Caixa banking group.

It offers 30 rides including 3 water rides and 6 roller coasters, and there are two airports that are within 30 minutes of the park so getting there or getting from there to the airport - to an accommodation near the airport or at the end of a family vacation when it's time to go home, is very easy.

Salou has a history of being used as a port town for the Romans and Greeks, for conquering missions and trade.

Salou offers a mediterranean climate which is perfect for a trip to one of many beaches in the local area.

Besides Port Aventura the town has other theme and water parks, and is a major tourist attraction. The area also draws in tourists due to its ancient architecture.

Some of the attractions are the Hurricane Condor which is a tower ride that is 100 metres tall, and a grand multi-media show - the Fiesta Aventura that operates every night.

It also features the fastest roller coaster in Europe - the Furius Baco.
The Furius Baco is hydraulically operated and was created by Intamin AG in 2007 and it reaches 83.9 miles per hour in only 3.5 seconds.

If you're worried about transportation - the closes airport (which offers regular bus services) is the Reus and the next one is one hour away - either by car or train, and is in Barcelona.

The Reus airport is located next to the beaches of Costa Daurada so you can go there to relax and have some fun before your flight. The airport is also next to a region with quality wines.
The airport has a yearly traffic of about one and a half million people due to its proximity to many sought after attractions and locations, and due to having several companies that offer cheaper transportation into Barcelona.

You can take a direct bus to Barcelona from the airport or choose one of the two other bus routes instead.

The Costa Daurada is "The Golden Coast" or "The Coast of Gold" in English, and offers a 216 kilometre long coastline, and operates as an important tourist location.

The beaches are kept clean for the tourists and locals have their own town-beaches that they can enjoy year round which you can see if you take a tour of the towns in the area to absorb some of Salou's history.
