San Pedro de Alcántara, Spain
In the Costa del Sol region of Spain you will find many interesting cities and towns that you can visit. Of these you may wish to see about visiting San Pedro de Alcántara. This town is one which has a very interesting history to it. The town was founded by General Manuel Gutierrez de la Concha who was the first Marqués del Duero. He choose to set this town as part of Spanish laws of the 19th century. According to this it was necessary to see about repopulating various areas of the country which were not inhabited.
To make way for this new settlement huge tracts of land were cleared of vegetation and drained. Once this process was completed dams and a complex yet highly efficient form of irrigation was set up in this locations where the town of San Pedro de Alcántara would grow. As the town developed new improvements for living were added until the town could begin to attract many visitors to its borders. Today you will find many interesting places to visit, activities to take part and a wide range of accommodations to choose from.
As you look at these various places that you can visit you will find they are kept in excellent condition and will provide you with an insight as to the history of San Pedro de Alcántara. Of the numerous sightseeing choices available to you, you may want to see the parish Church. This church was built in 1866 by the Marqués del Duero. It began functioning as a parish church only in 1940, prior to this period of time there is no historical evidence as to what role the building played in the day to day living of the people of San Pedro de Alcántara. Today the parish church has been fully renovated in the colonial style of architecture.
Another interesting place that you will find to visit in San Pedro de Alcántara is that of the Early Christian Basilica. This basilica which was discovered hidden among a grove of eucalyptus trees is the first basilica which has a double apse to be found in Spain. The plan of this basilica includes a sacristy and a baptistery. There are two apses as mentioned earlier and three naves to be seen here as well. Of this actual evidence you will not find much other than the foot of the walls and the foundation of the basilica itself. However some of the excavated finds from the basilica have been placed in the National Archeological Museum. Other finds have been taken to other museums in Málaga and Marbella.
You will also be able to see some Roman ruins which were discovered in San Pedro de Alcántara. These ruins seem to be like the ones that you will find for storing water such as a spa, public baths or even an aqueduct. The true purpose of these ruins remains a mystery however.
