Santander, Spain
On the North coast of Spain, in the community of Cantabria, you will find Santander. It is a port city and the capitol of Cantabria. Its harbor is located at the Bay of Santander which has one of the largest enclosed coastal areas of Spain. At the entrance of the Bay you will find the Isle of Mouro with its lighthouse, certainly a view you would want to see when visiting.
Santander is known as one of the most popular tourist destinations. Its climate is mild and the beach facilities and stunning historical sites are well known.
The Palacio de la Magdalena is one of those historical sites that attracts a lot of interest.. It was constructed as a seasonal residence for the royal family of Spain. In 1982 it was declared a historical monument and today it is the most visited place in the city. The palace was also home to the students of the International University for a short period of time. Other historical sites that you should visit are the Santander Cathedral, the Ayuntamiento and the Grand Casino de Sardinero (the big market of Sardinero).
The Park Vaguada of Flames can be found between the historic and the new area of the city. It is a beautiful garden which is partly maintained by the local citizens. At the entrance of the city you can find the Parque de la Marga, which mainly contains olive trees and is also partly maintained by the locals.
At the Museum of Fine Arts a large and diverse collection is exhibited containing sculptures, paintings, drawings, medals and much more, with a grand total of over 4000 items. The collection is owned by the city historian and made available to the public.
The Museo Taurino shows a whole different side of Spain. Here you can view the history of bullfighting including a display of traditional items such as costumes and capes.
A number of galleries are located throughout the city, such as the Watercolor Art Gallery, the Three Strokes Art Gallery and the Photography Workshop Roales. They are usually opened in the evenings.
Families and children can visit the Planetarium or join a Marine Excursion. These excursions take their passengers around the bay and will educate them about the local maritime highlights.
In the city centre you will find a large number of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. You can visit the casino or the local movie theatre. Several tours to explore the city are available, like the shopping route, the monumental route and the environmental route. This last one takes off at the old track that leads to Faro de Cabo Mayor and passes the stunning beaches, along the farthest point of the Santander coast to end at Cabo Mayor. Afterward you could extend your walk and go to the island of La Virgen del Mar to get an amazing view from the beaches there.
Transportation around the area is easy, there are taxis available and you can use public transport if you do not own a car. Also, you are able to rent a bicycle at multiple places so you can move quickly around the city.
History, culture, beaches, great weather and fun activities are all part of Santander. Putting all this and more together makes the city an excellent destination for tourists. Whether you want to have a short and fun trip with friends, a relaxing time as a couple or have an active vacation with your family, Santander makes it all possible.
