Torremolinos, Spain
Situated on Spain’s Costa del Sol, Torremolinos is one of the best places to get away for a bit of fun in the sun – even with the many tourists meandering around in the height of summer. With moderate temperatures and mild weather, Torremolinos also makes for a good winter destination. A weekend getaway during the off-season months of winter can refresh you considerably, and you won’t have to battle the hordes tourists that normally descend on Torremolinos in the summer months. The prices drop down, and you can take life at a more relaxed pace if you so wish.
Regardless of what time of year to go to Torremolinos however, there are many things that you can do, both in and around Torremolinos. Although this city can be seen in a quick weekend getaway, it stands to reason that the longer you stay there, the more sights you can take in.
To begin with, you might want to begin your stay in Torremolinos with a walk down the seven mile long beach promenade. This runs alongside the beach and affords great views, especially at sunrise and sunset. If this tires you out you can nip on over to one of the many sidewalk café’s and have a relaxing cup of coffee before you begin your meandering way back to your hotel.
If you get tired of the touristy gimmicks and want to find the real Torremolinos, head on over to the barrio de La Carihuela. This is what Torremolinos was like before the tourist boom took hold and transformed it into a haven for hotels, condos and sunbathing tourists. Whilst there you might also want to try out one of the local specialties – Pescaíto Frito, (small fried fish).
If this is not your scene, you can take a walk towards Torre de Pimentel, the fourteenth century watchtower. From here if you are feeling adventurous – or particularly hale and hearty – you can descend the steep steps leading down to the promenade.
Another great place to relax when you are in Torremolinos is at the famed Aquapark. It is reputed to have the largest water-slide in all of Europe and can be a fun day out for you and the kids. (It can also be a fun day for you and your friends even without young kids!)
If you want to get away from Torremolinos and explore the countryside, you will find that Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Granada are all within easy reach of a relaxing day trip. Malaga especially might interest you if you would like to take in the recently built Picasso Museum. If you want to get away from all the tourist spots however and discover the real Spanish countryside, there is a number of charming little Andalucian villages you can explore around Torremolinos.
Be sure to visit the Calle San Miguel in Torremolinos. This busy shopping area is just perfect for finding that little knickknack to take home, and can be an enjoyable way to spend the morning before heading out for a boat trip where you can do some dolphin watching.
If none of these options is to your liking, you will find that lazing around on the beach is one of the better ways in which to spend your holiday. With a host of water sports available – such as water skiing, and windsurfing – to help you work off the fabulous food, you will find that spending your time in Torremolinos itself is just the thing for you.
With balmy breezes, great sea, and golden sands, Torremolinos is the place to be for a little bit of relaxation – no matter what season it is.
