Valencia, Spain. It was capital of the old kingdom of Valencia; and is found three hours to the east of Madrid and four hours to the south of Barcelona. This sunny city in Spain is a place where you can spend countless happy hours whiling away the time.
It is home to such things as Agua de Valencia (or Valencia Water) which is an intriguing mix of orange juice and Cava; and a massive project known as The City of Arts and Sciences. Valencia is also the birthplace of one of the most well-known dishes around, paella.
If you are thinking of going to Valencia, you should try to avoid the hot, humid month of August for two reasons. The weather being one of them, the second reason lies in the fact that the inhabitants of this once-sleepy little town also go away on holiday during that time of year, leaving most everything closed.
And considering the fact that most people travel to Valencia for its sunny climate, winter might not be the time of year you want to go either. Autumn is good with spring being the best time of year to visit.
In fact, the beginning of spring is generally marked with the annual Fallas Festival or the Fallas de San Jose. Fallas are large papier mache models that are burned, and it is a sight to behold indeed, as some of these models are a year in the making, and can be quite tall. Fireworks are also another favorite staple of the festival so don’t be surprised to find the streets ringing with the sound of it for about a week or so.
As mentioned paella is a local delicacy born in Valencia itself, and no trip here is complete without sampling some authentic paella. It might also be surprising to learn that paella is not only a seafood dish, but can also be made with meat, usually chicken or rabbit. However, be sure that you do get some of the authentic stuff and not the mass made tourist paella that is sold in some places.
Some good ways of distinguishing these places is to know that paella is typically eaten at mid-day (which means that any place serving it to you at dinner is not a place you want to be); it is also a somewhat large dish and the minimum order of paella is normally for two people, so watch out for those who will tell you they can easily give you a single serving (unless of course there is some kindly soul who is willing to share it with you).
There is much to see and do while in Valencia, and one of these is the massive development project for the City of Arts and Science. The architecture of the place is nothing short of stunning and was designed by renowned architect, Santiago Calatrava.
The Barri del Carne is a perfect place to while away the time with plenty of things to see on foot, as well as a number of trendy cafés and shops to relax in. Another interesting place is The Seu cathedral. The doors of this cathedral come from three different architectural periods and are interesting to look at. Additionally, a trip up one of the towers – The Micalet Tower – will yield very nice views of Valencia.
One place that you should really make an effort to get to however, is the Lladró Porcelain Museum and Factory. Surprisingly it is free to visit the factory, although you will have to schedule your trip in advance. You not only get to see the process of making the world famous porcelain sculptures, but you also get to view what is a truly stunning collection all in one place at the end of the tour. Well worth a visit.
