As capitol of Castella-León in northern Spain, Valladolid has a rich history. The city still has a lot of its historical buildings and sites. Culture is a very important part of the daily life here as it is home to the university and many events throughout the year like the International Film week, one of the most famous and oldest international film festivals.
Those interested in history will be very pleased to see several different sites in the city. The Diocesan Museum, located near the cathedral and the great chapel house, holds a number of masterpieces of art and historical artefacts, like a silver monstance by Juan de Arce and carvings attributed to Gregorio Fernández.
When walking though the city you will come across the large Gothic church of Saint Benedict, the San Pablo Church, the city hall and the Royal Palace. You can also visit the preserved houses where persons important to history once lived, like the house where the author of the famous novel Don Quixote lived with his family. Or the house of Christopher Columbus, which is now a museum exhibiting items related to the discovery of America.
One of the interesting museums you can visit is the Museo Oriental where art from the Philippines, China and other oriental areas are shown to public. The collection includes sculptures, paintings, weapons, porcelain and other works of art. Other museums of interest are the Museo Nacional de Escultura and the Museo de Valladolid. This last one exhibits works of art and archeology.
Easter is the most important holiday in the region and Valladolid celebrates it with traditional processions and seminars. Those who are not religious can enjoy the music and the parade.
The city also contributes to a better world and once a year the Feria de Valladolid takes place. The main subject for this festival is alternative fuel for vehicles and bringing manufacturers, designers, distributors and anyone who can make a difference together to try and come to a solution, together. The first year this event took place was 2009. Visitors can try the latest inventions themselves and learn more about the possibilities of alternative fuel.
Located in the city you can also find an 18-hole golf course. It is open all year round and it has multiple facilities available like a swimming pool, a restaurant and a tennis court. When you are looking for other activities in town, you can visit one of the many shops, play at the casino or visit one of the many confectioners available.
There are also several excellent restaurants that serve traditional Spanish dishes you must try when visiting, such as The Trojan Horse restaurant which is divided into two floors and only serves home cooking. If you would like to try a little bit of everything you could visit Bar Ceyjo which serves the best tapas in town. Or if you are looking for something modern, try Azalea Restaurant where they have updated traditional dishes and serve the most exclusive foods.
Valledolid also has a sparkling nightlife and multiple bars, clubs, restaurants and other entertainment facilities are located in the city centre. Some of the top recommended bars and clubs are the Tin Tin Supper Club, the Attic, Harlem and Salamandra.
You can easily plan a visit to another town or city nearby and the accommodations are of high quality. And if you are really looking for something special, you should visit at the time of the International Film Festival when a great number of activities and events are spread throughout town.
