Bern, Switzerland

When people think about Switzerland they think about chocolates or even skiing, but there is more to this country then those things. Take for example the city of Bern which is located in the Swiss plateau. As you come to this city you will find there are many things that you can see and do while you are here. These will range from seeing monuments, museums and even a bear pit or two. Before you start on your tour of Bern you should take the time to organize a sightseeing list.

As stated earlier there are many things that you can see and do while you are in the city of Bern, and this includes a visit to the bear pits. You can look at the bears which live in these pits. At the moment the bears are confined to the pits but there are plans to extend their living space so that they will be able to swim in the river near their enclosure.

Traveling away from the bears you should take the time to visit Zytglogge in Bern. This is the Clock Tower which is located near the center of the old town. The clock tower was built around the 13th century. Just before the hour, every hour right through the day you will hear a little song and the jester at the top of the clock will beat his drum. Then on the hour you will see some clock work bears and an old bearded king will appear on the face of the clock. Besides giving this show and telling the time the clock tower also tells the month, the phase of the moon and the sign of the zodiac too.

While you are in Bern you can take a guided tour inside of the clock tower while the clockwork show is going on outside to see how this display works. You will need to book your tour in advance however as it is well worth a visit. Lovers of history will enjoy a visit to the Berne Historical Museum.

This museum is the second largest museum in Switzerland. Here you will be able to see many different exhibits including that of Bernese historical artifacts from the prehistoric times up to today. The most important ethnographic collection can also be found within this museum. Before you visit the museum you should enquire about the times that it is open as Monday’s are one of the day’s when you will not be able to visit the museum.

You may enjoy a visit to the Tierpark Dählhölzli. This is a zoo in Bern which can be found along the Aare River. Here there are many enclosures which can be found located out of doors. Some of these animal enclosures are integrated with the river providing the animals living there an environment which is almost like their natural habitat.

For lovers of nature and for lovers of the historic a visit to Bern will show them a place where these are part of normal life. As you explore all of these sights keep in mind that there is much more to see and do while you are her. So much in fact that one visit to Bern will not be able to satisfy you.
