Lausanne, Switzerland
Lausanne is located in the French speaking region of Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva. With the mountains to the northwest the beauty of Lausanne is known far and wide. Lausanne is known not only for its beauty but for being the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee. This Roman settled area is also in the heart of wine country.
Thanks to its notable history there are many places for visitors to visit and enjoy. With its many museums, monuments, and art galleries there is plenty of culture for you to see and sample while in this picturesque city.
Lausanne is home to several different museums each with a slightly different theme. A good place to start, however, would be the Lausanne History Museum. This museum is home to, like the name implies, the historical artifacts of the city. With four exhibitions a year, this museum displays the history of the city from the middle ages up to the nineteenth century. The multi-faced history is present in each of the collections that are displayed here throughout the year.
Since Lausanne is the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee another museum that is a must stop is the Olympic Museum. With more than ten thousand pieces exhibited in the museum it is the largest Olympic Museum in the world. The sites of this museum are not just located in the walls of the museum building either. The museum is surrounded by a park that contains works of art that feature sporting themes. One of the most notable works of art in the collection is the American Athlete by French sculptor Auguste Rodin.
If art is what interests you, be sure to check out any of the three main art galleries in Lausanne. For contemporary art then check out the Synopsis Art Gallery. This gallery exhibits one or two artists at a time but you get to view many of these artists work in one setting unlike a museum where you only get to see a single sample of their work.
When you are done checking out the interesting art galleries in the area it’s time to check out the monuments. The Lausanne Cathedral began construction in 1170 but wasn’t finished until 1215. It underwent many changes in 1536. This beautiful multi-colored interior church still has many facets of its original twelfth century construction. There are many paintings and panes to view and there are even guided tours offered during the summer months. This giant artwork is a must see when visiting the Lausanne area.
There are also many local bars and discos to attend if you like the night life. The Babylone is one such club where you can party til dawn.
If you are still interested in the culture scene after dark but not much into partying hard, then be sure to attend one of Lausanne’s many theatres or ballets.
Lausanne’s beauty is a thing to behold. The culture and art can keep you busy for days and with so many things to see and do it’s no wonder people travel to the Lausanne area.
