Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Scenic, charming, and one of the best skiing resorts around, Saas Fee in Switzerland has also been compared to its more popular cousin, Zermatt. Indeed, in some ways this is true as Saas Fee offers exceptional skiing almost year round, along with great views. In short, Saas Fee is Zermatt, but without the Matterhorn.

This deficiency however, is what makes Saas Fee so appealing to many people. True, the Matterhorn is nowhere in sight, but then again, none of the millions of tourists found traipsing through Zermatt, are to be found here either, which makes Saas Fee truly amazing.

However, it is an injustice to Saas Fee to compare it with Zermatt as this ski village has its own unique beauty and charm.

This can be seen in the pedestrian-only streets (which have been that way since its inception, even after a road was paved allowing vehicles access to Saas Fee); and in the beauty of the giant glacier known as the Fairy Glacier, or Feegletscher, spilling out from the awe inspiring horseshoe mountain range. Additionally, Saas Fee’s mountain range boasts of thirteen mountains whose peaks breach the 4000m mark.

For those who come for the skiing you can be assured of finding a good ski run at just about any time of the year, as Saas Fee is open for both skiing and snowboarding for 10 months of the year. Although off-piste skiing is available, it is not always recommended as encountering glacial crevasses is more probable here than anywhere else.

However, if you came only to take in the beauty of the Swiss Alps, and prefer to leave the skiing to those who are more adventurous, you will find that Saas Fee is a most attractive destination to be in, to while away your time, be it simply for lounging around taking in the beauty of the surrounding countryside, or for exploring it. You could even take a trip on the highest underground Funicular that takes you 3500m up the Mittelallin mountain.

If you want to get away from skiing for a little bit, you might want to try out any one of the other numerous winter activities to be found here, including snowboarding, tobogganing, and paragliding. Or if you want something a little less adventurous you can take a sleigh ride instead. Hiking is also a popular pastime in Saas Fee and there are many hiking trails to be found in the area.

For a little rest and relaxation after a hard day of skiing, hiking, or otherwise lounging about, you will find that Saas Fee offers a number of bars and nightclubs for you to explore. There are also a number of different restaurants available in Saas Fee, and for a dining experience with a difference, you can try out the world’s highest revolving restaurant. Found at a whopping 3500m the restaurant is located on the Mittelallin mountain (you can even combine your trip on the funicular with your dining experience).
