St. Moritz, Switzerland

The country of Switzerland is very popular with many people and its cities such as St. Moritz are well known the world over. The resort of St. Moritz is situated in the Engadine Valley in the district of Mlaoja. The Swiss canton to which the resort belongs to is that of Grabünden. You will be able to see the Piz Bernina which is the highest summit in the whole of the eastern Alps is just a few kilometers south of St. Moritz

You will find that of the various resorts in the alpine area of Switzerland St. Moritz has a long and well established reputation. In fact historically you will discover the whole of the alpine ski resorts began with this ski city. The origins of the resort began in 1864 as the result of a dare between Johannes Badrutt; who was a St. Moritz hotel pioneer; and four British summer guests of his hotel.

In this dare Badrutt told these guests they should come back to St. Moritz in the winter. If they did not like the service and entertainment they would find he would pay for their trip fares to and from London. On the other hand if they found they like staying at the resort during the winter they could stay as his guests for as long as they liked. From the popularity of St. Moritz today you can guess as to whether the four British guests like the resort and the entertainment they found during the winter months.

For the lover of winter sports you will find that St. Moritz has what you need to make your holiday here a wonderful one. You will also find there are many fun activities that you can do here in the summer months as well. During the summer some of the activities that you will find visitors to St. Moritz engaging on are race walking, cycling, running and hiking along the many paths that you can find here. In addition to these sporting activities you will also have the Segantini Museum.

Here in this museum you will find numerous paintings which were done by Giovanni Segantini who was painter who lived in St. Moritz for the last 5 years of his life. It was while he was living here that he started painting about life, death and nature. During the winter months you will find there are many snow based activities you can take part in. These will include skiing, bob sledding, tobogganing, cross country skiing, and hiking across the snow covered grounds.

Besides these activities you will also be able to see the “White Turf” horse race which takes place in St. Moritz every year. This interesting horse race takes place on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. Another fascinating winter activity that you will be able to try is that of seeing the ice cave at Piz Corvatsch – which stands at an altitude of 3,300 meters – and then skiing your way down to St. Moritz-Bad via the eight kilometer long slope. You could on the other hand see about going for a bob sled ride in the very natural but very rare bob sledge which forms during the middle of December each year.

As you see there are many wonderful activities for you to take part in while you are in St. Moritz. The beauty and atmosphere of this resort makes coming here either in the summer or winter a pleasure that you don’t want to miss.
