Zermatt, Switzerland

Boasting some of the best views in the world, let alone in Europe, Zermatt in Switzerland is home to the famous Matterhorn Mountain. In tune with its alpine roots and snow covered surroundings, Zermatt is primarily a skiing village, although it is open to cyclists, hikers, climbers and everyone else in between.

Zermatt is also one of most expensive places to be in terms of accommodation. This is due in no small part to the stunning scenery, the amazing range of mountains surrounding the village, and the fact that it is a little slice of heaven for skiers and non-skiers alike.

Although most people go to Zermatt for the skiing, there are those of us who brave the cold climes to explore this small village with its romantic alleyways, delightful chalets and amazing views.

Regardless of the reason you travel to Zermatt it cannot be denied that once you step off the train leading to Zermatt, you are transported back in time to the days of old. With a strict policy of no cars (except those which run on electricity) Zermatt is a delightful haven that takes you closer to nature than you might have thought possible without having to resort to camping.

The reason for the strict policy of having no combustion engine vehicles within Zermatt (with a few exceptions) is to prevent air pollution which could mar the delightful view of the surrounding countryside. Be assured that any violation of this law will be quickly and speedily rectified with a fine against the offender.

There are electric-powered buses, and taxis available to take you from one end of the city to the other however, so there is no need to worry if you don’t feel like traversing through the small length of Zermatt’s streets after a hard day of skiing or hiking. There are also horse-drawn carriages to be found around the streets of Zermatt and these are a very nice way of going through the city.

Due to its car-free existence, Zermatt is very pedestrian friendly, and you will find that it is quite easy to walk from one end of the village to the other. People are friendly, the atmosphere is good, and the alpine mountain air is very refreshing.

Since skiing is what most people come to Zermatt for, it should not come as a surprise to find that Zermatt is surrounded by a ring of mountains, twenty-nine of these whose peak goes above the 4000 meter (13100 ft) mark with Matterhorn dominating the landscape at a breathtaking 4478 meters (14692ft).

Another reason to make Zermatt such a popular skiing destination lies in the fact that it has one of the longest ski seasons in Europe, with summer skiing also available.

It should also be noted that while Zermatt styles itself as a village (and geographically speaking this is quite true), it is truly cosmopolitan in nature and offers many a large number of places to eat, drink and generally be merry. If you are not careful you will also find that it can make deep inroads into your pocket. Zermatt is not cheap, although you can find budget hotels and even good budget restaurants and bars in and around the town.

There are four main skiing areas, and these are accessible through an array of cable cars, ski lifts, funicular, telecabin and mountain railway systems. The four main skiing areas are Klein Matterhorn, Schwarzsee, Sunnegga, and Gornergrat. Where you go skiing will depend to a large extent on your skiing abilities. For instance, if you are new to skiing or haven’t gone skiing in a long time, you might want to start off on Sunnegga where you can build up your skiing skills and be swishing down the other slopes in no time at all.

Whichever path you choose however, whichever time of year you come, Zermatt will offer you one of the best places to visit with awe-inspiring views and exhilarating winter sports. It might not be the cheapest place you can stay in, but you can be assured that it will rank as one of the best.
