When you travel to the state of Virginia you will be able to find the independent city of Alexandria which is located in this Commonwealth state. You will find the city to be a beautiful place to visit as well as live. As with many cities which are near to the capital of the US, Alexandria has been shaped by this closeness. The city is located along the western banks of the Potomac River
For the visitor to Alexandria in Virginia you will find there are many places of interest that you can visit. While these sights are numerous you may want to take some time to absorb the atmosphere of each site before you venture on with more sightseeing. Of these various sights that you will find you may want to visit The Spite House. The house which dates from around 1830 is an interesting privately owned house you may want to see from the outside. The main features you will find about this house is that is has been painted a bright blue colour and was built in an ally to prevent people using the alley without permission.
The house is only 7 feet wide and it is about 33 feet deep. Due to the nature of the house and its size it has been featured on various television shows and publications. After you have looked at the Spite House you may want to head over to Cameron Street. Here at number 508 Cameron Street you will find what was George Washington's town, home and office. This house however is not the original town house as the original house was burned down in the 1850s. The House which is currently standing here was reconstructed from plans in the 1960s.
Another interesting place that you will be able to see when you visit Alexandria, Virginia is that of the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary. This is a local museum which was built to recreate the apothecary and pharmacy which stood at this location from the late 18th century right until the early 20th century. As you walk around looking at the exhibits found here you will be able to see the various products that people used to make heal themselves of the different afflictions of those time periods.
Having looked through this museum to your heart’s content you may want to visit the George Washington Masonic Memorial. This memorial was designed and built during the 1930s by the Freemasons as a monument commemorating George Washington. The monument was designed to look like the Lighthouse at Alexandria which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
