With a warm tropical atmosphere and the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other it’s no wonder why Key West is a popular tourist attraction. The Florida Keys have been home to many famous people as well. Former President Harry Truman visited the keys and enjoyed them so much he had a home there where he spent one hundred seventy-five days of his presidency. Ernest Hemingway also spent time enjoying the keys, writing A Farewell to Arms during his time there.
Of course if you go to the keys one of the first places you must visit, besides the beaches, is Hemingway’s home. This beautiful home has been preserved as Hemingway lived in it. Viewing a home from a different era is enjoyable enough but be sure to check out the cats that live on the property. All are decedents of Hemingway’s cat and they all have the same genetic mutation . . . six toes.
When you’ve finished your visit to the famed author’s home take a trip to Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden. This tropical oasis is home to several endangered species. Nancy Forrester, the owner of this park, is an artist and environmental educator. This park is a tranquil and beautiful site to see. If you are planning a trip to Key West, be sure to stop by here.
To see the city without wearing out your sandals just catch the conch train. This train travels around Key West. The informative tour guides point out some of the sites. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
Another must stop is the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration. An hour or so before sunset Mallory square comes alive. Performers begin their acts and then you get to see an absolutely breathtaking sunset. When visiting the square, be sure to bring some dollars with you to tip the performers, they’re worth it.
There is plenty of afterhour’s fun to be had when visiting Key West. For those that appreciate a good rum, head over to Pat Croce’s Rum barrel. With live music nightly, good food, and great service you will be sure to have a good time. Food and fun is not the only thing the Rum Barrel is known for. It is famous for having the largest selection of Rum in the world. Pick your poison; enjoy your meal and the show.
The pirate enthusiasts can enjoy the Pirate Walking Tour and Pirate Pub crawl. What better way to learn the true history of pirates than to explore the seaport while hearing tales of shipwrecks and treasure chest. Then you can enjoy the pirate drinking history by doing the “pub crawl” between some of the oldest bars in the seaport.
Key West is obviously a great place to soak up some rays, since it is an island, but there are lots of other things to enjoy. Whether its pirate lore, historic homes, or you just want to party hard Key West has it all.
