Kissimmee, Orlando’s neighbor, is probably best known for having reasonable hotel rates and being close enough to the attractions in Orlando for visitors to stay there instead. But this hopping little tourist stop has plenty of its own little attractions for visitors to enjoy as well.
Nearby Kissimmee is the beach of Cocoa Beach. This resort and coastline gives visitors that much needed beach time. Spend the day relaxing on the sand and enjoying the surf. While you’re there you can walk the promenade sampling the local eateries and shops.
But why not check out all Kissimmee has to offer too. While in Kissimmee, check out some of the parks for a fun outdoor adventure. Markinson Island is a park that is situated on the Lake Tohopekaliga. This island park can only be reached by boat. You can enjoy hiking, bird watching and boating during your island visit.
Another good park stop is the Lake Kissimmee State Park. This natural beauty covers more than six thousand acres and has hiking trails and camping sites. You can check out the over two hundred different species of birds and enjoy picnics with breathtaking views.
For those that are interest in landmarks Kissimmee is home to many. Among those that should be seen is the Monument of States. This tower contains fifteen hundred stones from all fifty states in the union. It also contains twenty-two stones from foreign countries. It stands fifty feet tall.
Also a must see is the Kissimmee’s American Legion Home. This historic building is also known as the Makinson-Carson Post 10, named for two of Kissimmee’s World War One heroes. A monument to these gentlemen, Billie Makinson and Nat Carson, is located in front of the building.
Site seeing isn’t all there is to Kissimmee. Families can enjoy Old Town. Here you will find food, dining and lots of entertainment. For the kid in all of us who love amusement rides, they have rides open all year long. The back part of the park is considered Kid’s town which houses, merry-go-rounds, tea cups and the Wacky Worm Kiddie Coaster. The adult size coaster is called the Windstorm Roller coaster and boasts over fourteen hundred feet of track and 80 degree banks. There are fourteen rides in all. Tickets for the rides are a dollar per ticket but you can purchase unlimited ride wristbands if you plan on riding a lot.
Of course, Kissimmee is probably best known for being within a short drive to Disney World. This popular theme park is just a short car ride away. Universal Studios, located near Disney World and SeaWorld are also just a short drive from Kissimmee.
The Kissimmee area offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy all the amenities of nearby towns such as Orlando and Cocoa Beach without any of the stress and hustle or bustle. Kissimmee offers visitors a few things to keep them in town but they can always come back to crash after a hard day’s play nearby.
