Minneapolis, City of Lakes, is the better known twin city in the State of Minnesota, USA. (The other city is St Paul). Minneapolis straddles the Mississippi River on both banks. Interestingly enough, the name of Minneapolis is derived from a confluence of two words from two distinctly separate languages which are separated by a vast ocean.
The first part of the name ‘Minne’ came from the language of the Dakota tribe, while the second portion of the name hails from Ancient Greek, ‘polis’. This is an allusion to the natural lakes which are abundant in Minneapolis (22 in fact). With such an extensive network of lakes in and around the city of Minneapolis, it is not surprising then to find that there are many acres of parkland in which to explore around in.
If you find yourself on a trip to Minneapolis however, this is not all there is to do. True, the lakes and the parks are something to see and explore, but you will find there is more to Minneapolis than meets the eye if you just dig a little deeper.
One of the ways in which you can dig around Minneapolis is by bike. The city has very recently become cycle friendly, and you will find that it is an excellent way to get around Minneapolis. In fact, such has been the development of cycling and cyclists in Minneapolis that some of the cycling trails are ploughed clear of snow at the same time the major streets are.
If cycling around Minneapolis doesn’t appeal to you however, you can always walk around the city. This can be accomplished in two ways: the first being the normal route of walking on the paved streets at ground level, while the second entails you walking through the various Skyways interconnecting buildings in central downtown Minneapolis. These walkways are a great way to get around Minneapolis without getting caught up in the streets below. They are also a great way in which to get across town without being held up for pedestrian traffic lights.
If you do traverse through these, you might find yourself tempted to stop off at one of the many shops or restaurants dotting the Skyways. If you are visiting Minneapolis during the winter months, you will find the use of the Skyway especially useful as you can avoid going outside into the cold winter weather to get from one place to the other.
If food is your thing, then there are bakeries and bistros galore in Minneapolis to whet your appetite. Or if you want fine dining, you can find a range of good places to go that serve all types of food from French cuisine, to hot Indian dishes, to Fusion restaurants, to American, Japanese, Chinese and a whole host of other food types in between. The one thing you can be assured of when you go to Minneapolis is that there is no shortage of good places in which to relax and enjoy a good meal.
If you find yourself in Minneapolis between the celebrations of Thanksgiving (November) and Christmas (December) you should treat yourself to a view of the Holidazzle Parade. A glittering parade of fancy costumes and lights that occurs on several days of the week during these two months.
One thing cannot be denied however, when you visit Minneapolis, you are going to a place of beauty – and with so many lakes and parks for you to visit, with so many places in which to dine in comfort, and so many museums to explore around in, you will not be hard pressed to find something to do while you are there.
