Lying on the Dee River near the boarder of Wales is the city of Chester England. This city is famous for being one of the last towns in all of England to fall to the Normans, marking a definitive transition from the Anglo Saxon rule to that of William’s choosing. However, Chester’s history extends at least back into the Roman rule of Britain, marking a deep and nuanced history.
The most interesting site to see in the city of Chester are the walls themselves. The architecture the surrounds the city are black and white, literally. These are the most complete city walls in all of England measuring nearly two miles around with only one breaking point in the southwestern section.
Another interesting and unique site is the Rows. These black and white buildings contain shops or homes on the ground floor of the building and are often below street level. To reach the entrances to these shops/dwellings you have to enter a walkway that often slopes down and feels very much like a crypt.
Considered the most important structure to have survived in Chester is the Chester Castle with its Agricola Tower. The castle overlooks the River Dee and while much of it has been replaced by the neoclassical style, the surviving style is purely medieval. This castle includes an earlier Saxon fortification and is an important site when visiting Chester. Enthusiasts of the early Norman period will enjoy studying the contrasts presented.
In modern times, the city of Chester strives to preserve much of the medieval image while fully enjoying many modern amenities. Steeped in the past, Chester has launched an ambitious initiative to make the town a stop on any tour of Britain. Intended to be completed within a decade, one would be remiss to avoid this lovely town with a medieval soul.
