In the county of Devon, England you will find the historic city of Exeter. You will find that Exeter is also the county town of Devon and therefore it is home to the Devon County Council. This city can be located near the River Exe and it is about 37 miles northeast of Plymouth. Exeter is also about 70 miles southwest of Bristol. In the various history books about England you will find that this city has been in existence from time immemorial.
The city of Exeter is known to be the most south westerly of the Roman fortified settlements found in England. The Exeter Cathedral which is an Anglican church was built in this area in 1050. Today you will find that Exeter is considered as a popular tourist destination but as it does not get overcrowded you will be able to enjoy yourself while you are here.
As there are many attractive sights that you will encounter while you are in Exeter you may want to take your time to absorb the atmosphere and the beautiful workmanship you will find before you move on to the next sight. The first place that you should visit while you are here is that of the Exeter Cathedral and that of the Cathedral Green. The church has been built in the Gothic style and it is breathtakingly fabulous. You will find that in this cathedral you will see the longest unbroken stone roof beam that can be found in any building in any corner of the world.
The refreshing Exeter Green meanwhile is the perfect place for you to relax and take in the serene atmosphere of this area. While you are relaxing you may want to have a summer picnic on the Green. In addition to seeing Exeter Cathedral you will be able to visit a number of medieval churches which have their home here in Exeter. These churches are St Mary Arches, St Stephen's, St Olave's, St Martin's, St Petrock's, and St Mary Steps. These churches can be found in the city centre and they are all well worth visiting.
Once you have visited these churches you might want to head over to the ruins of Rougemont Castle. This castle was built soon after the Norman Conquest of England. Until 2006 parts of the castle – which were functioning – was used as an Assize court. The court was then moved to a new Crown Courts building and the castle’s future now remains uncertain. You will see a plaque near the ruins of the Norman gatehouse which states that in 1685 Alice Molland was imprisoned in Exeter and later executed on the charge of witchcraft. She was the last person in England to be executed for this reason.
In addition to seeing these sights you can find many others like Mols Coffee House, the Guild of Tuckers and Weavers, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum to name but a few. As you can see there are many more places which you can discover when you visit Exeter.
