With its rolling valleys, scenic water scenes and picturesque forestry, Inverness is a popular tourist destination with a rich and vibrant culture which is only equalled both by its colourful and engaging history along with its mesmerising scenery. Located at the Northern extremities of Scotland, the city has traditionally been a hub of economic and political activity for the entire Highland area and whilst Edinburgh is the official capital of the whole of Scotland, Inverness is hailed and regarded as the de facto capital of the Highland region.

Reading through any history book about the city makes for fascinating reading indeed, if only for the length of time for which one faction managed to retain power before it was brutally snatched from their hands. A prime example of this can be plainly seen in relation to the Jacobite occupation of the Inverness fortress in 1715, which they managed to hold onto until 1746 at which time, it was surrendered to be demolished.

Today, the city remains a highly prosperous and affluent part of Scotland indeed, and whilst other parts of the country have struggled with the steady and rapid decline of their traditional forms of industry such as distillery and manufacturing, Inverness has made the transition to high tech production admirably.

No visit to Inverness could be complete without a visit to Inverness Castle which is without a doubt one of the most famous sites of the city. The castle overlooks the River Ness. There have been several castles built on this site since 1057. Each succeeding castle was re-built by the successors of numerous battles for the castle and its adjacent grounds.

Today the castle is home to the Inverness Sheriff Court. Please note that the Castle itself is not actually for access to the general public, however the adjacent grounds of the Castle are, and are certainly well worth a visit. The Castle itself is situated directly on the edge of a cliff and this makes for an extremely dramatic scenic backdrop indeed!

While you can’t enter the castle for a visit you can check out some other places of interest here in Inverness. For example the Old High Church is the oldest church in the city. It is also called the Town Church. You will find the Old High Church on Church Street. To learn more about the church and its history you can take a guided tour which is available on Fridays from June to August.

Another place of interest to see while you are in Inverness is that of the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. This museum can be found at the base of Inverness Castle. Here you will be able to look at a number of historic weapons which were used by the people who lived in the area. There is also a collection of Pict stones and other artefacts. You can also see some artefacts which are on loan from the National Museum of Scotland in this museum.
