Norwich, United Kingdom
The ancient and important city of Norwich was once the second largest city in Britain after London. Starting from the early 10th century, this English city has a rich history and heritage of various rulers and political systems.
Norwich has seen many an era come and go, but it still stands as one of the key symbols of British history. Earlier the Romans made it the capital of their empire but around 450 AD when the Anglo-Saxons came here, they developed the Northwick, Westwick and Thorpe areas of the city. The modern city has much to offer for the visitor but history remains the key factor for most of the people coming to see Norwich.
Norwich was always considered as a manufacturing and industrial city, where industries were continuously set up during the span of history till the 20th century. Shoe manufacturing was one of the primary industries of the city. Another interesting thing is the different types of chocolates made in the city. That really sounds delicious for the chocolate lovers, as they can experience the finest home made chocolate.
Shopping is another specialty of Norwich. The city has an old marketplace which used to be the centre of trading in the 17th and 18th centuries. Until quite recently, this marketplace was used for business, but due to modern remodeling and construction, it has been redeveloped and now it has less of a shopping area but more of convenient shopping mechanisms for customers.
When talking about culture and education, it should be noted that the city of Norwich has the University of East Anglia on the outskirts of Norwich. There are also many theatres in the city but one of the most prominent ones is the Norwich Theatre Royal, the theatre which has stood for more than 250 years and has seen some memorable and lasting theatre performances in its halls.
For art and music lovers, the annual Norfolk and Norwich Festival provides a chance to listen to unique music as well as see the artistic pursuits and masterpieces of local as well as foreign artists. The Norwich Art Centre is another place for the welfare and preservation of art and is a good place to while away your time in. The art centre also promotes art activities and houses many exhibitions throughout the year.
There are also many museums located in the city, the largest being the Norwich Castle Museum, which contains archaeological and other historic facts and pieces about ancient cities and the lifestyle of the peoples there. The architectural characteristics of Norwich are mostly influenced by the medieval era and the buildings clearly show all these attributes as well as other prominent medieval symbols. There are rail, road and air links which connect this great and historic city with the rest of England today, making it fairly easy to get there. Not everyone would appreciate a trip to Norwich, but it cannot be denied that this is one place you should really make an effort to go see.
