The city of Plymouth can be found on the coast of Devon. The city lies in the southwest of the UK between two rivers. These rivers that you will see are the River Plym to the east of the city and the River Tamar. These rivers then join the Plymouth Sound. For many people who come to city you will find a city which is both modern and yet one that holds the traditions of the past close. The various places that you can visit while you are in Plymouth will help to make your holiday here more pleasant.

Of these various places you will find of interest while you are here the Royal Citadel is a place that you should see. You will be able to find this citadel training center at the east end of Plymouth Hoe. The Royal Citadel was built here in 1666 for a number of reasons ranging from defending the port from naval attacks, to training recruits for military service and also to suppress parliamentary tendencies which may have been present in Plymouth.

You will find that in the summer months there are guided tours that you can take. These will show you the various training facilities which were used. While you are in the Hoe area you will be able to see the statue of Sir Francis Drake. Besides these two attractions that you will find here in Plymouth there are many others. One other structure you will find of interest is that of Smeaton’s Tower. This was a lighthouse that was built in 1759 about 14 miles off shore. It was later dismantled and the top two thirds of the lighthouse were later rebuilt on the Plymouth Hoe in 1877.

While you are visiting the Hoe you should also take a look at the various war memorials that you will find here. At present there are over 9 such memorials from World War I, World War II, the National Armada Memorial, and the Plymouth Navel War Memorial. Of these the National Armada Memorial was built to commemorate the victory over the Spanish Armada.

These war memorials that you will find both in the Hoe and Plymouth were built to honor the brave men killed in the line of duty. As you look at these memorials you can feel not only the pride of knowing these men but also the thankfulness that these wars were finished before any more brave people died as a result of them.
