Reading, United Kingdom

Reading England is located at the confluence of the River Thames and River Kennet and was once home to an important monastery during the medieval period. The one time national centre hit hard times during the seventeenth century and has now become an important commercial center in the areas of insurance and information technology. Home to universities and many students the city of Reading has found itself also home to one of the biggest musical festivals in England.

One of the biggest attractions in Reading is the Reading Music Festival which is held yearly. Founded in 1971 this festival takes place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the August Bank Holiday weekend. This festival is always planned in conjunction with the Leeds festival with which it shares many of the same acts, who of course perform in both cities just on different days. This rock, punk, indie festival draws some eighty thousand people to the Reading area (seventy thousand to the Leeds area) and is held at Little John’s Farm on Richfield Avenue. You can purchase tickets that cover the entire weekend or just for the day. The three day tickets include free camping for anyone who is interested.

Not one to rock out there is other kinds of music to enjoy. You can always enjoy the Reading Symphony Orchestra. These armatures are lead by a professional conductor and hold four main concerts a year. If you are in the area when one of these quarterly concerts are given be sure to get you ticket, it’ll be well worth it. Interested in hearing the kids, try to attend a Reading Youth Orchestra performance, these talented youths are a pleasure to listen to.

If you want a night at the theatre head over to the professional venues at The Hexagon or 21st South Street. The Hexagon is the venue for many rock and indie concerts as well as good old fashioned theatre. 21st South Street has events such as music, dance, comedy, live literature and fringe theatre.

If you want something a little more traditional in the way of the theatre then check out the Progress Theatre. Comprised of a self-governing group of amateurs the Progress Theatre puts on a yearly open air Shakespeare production that has become a highlight of Reading’s cultural community.

If it is museums you seek there are three for you to choose from. Began in 1786 the Museum of Reading offers you a little of everything. They have tapestries and they have antique collectibles. This is the oldest of the three museums in the area for you to visit.

If you are interested in English rural life, then check out the Museum of English Rural Life. This museum houses a collection of country living and farming tools that span the centuries. This is the national collection for the rural life artifacts in England.

The sleepy town of Reading is still clawing its way back into an important economic centre in the United Kingdom. If you are a rocker it’s a stop that must be made, especially during the bank holiday.
