York, United Kingdom

Found in the heart of Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, York is a city that is nearly two millennia old. Although ruins dating back to 8000 B.C. have been found, the oldest recorded date of York comes from when it was founded by the Romans in 71 A.D. Since that time York has been regularly inhabited and has grown into the city that is so well known today.

Christened in the beginning as Eboracum, then renamed Eoforwic by the Angles who took it over after Roman occupation, the name ‘York’ was most likely derived from Jorvik – the name given to the city after its eventual capture by Vikings in the ninth century. Jorvik (pronounced Yor-vik) was then evolved to York with the Norman Conquest in the thirteenth century.

Modern day York is nothing like its ancient or medieval self, and has now become very much a modern cultural hub. So much so in fact that it is known throughout England as the “City of Festivals”. Each year York is host to a number of festivals from a Jazz festival, to a Viking festival, to a Roman festival, to, oddly enough, something called a Ghost festival! And if you are really into beer York is also host to the York Beer & Cider festival.

Of course this is not the extent of York’s festival list, and it is always a good idea to find out whether there will be a festival around the dates you are thinking of going to York. This makes sense not only because it will give you a chance to visit York during a festival, but also because it can help you in your travel arrangements such as hotel bookings, transport etc.

Aside from the festivals which York has become famous for however, there is still much to see for all and sundry, and one such place is the York Dungeon. Full of dungeon-like atmosphere (sans actual prisoners, blood and gore) this is a chance for you to see a real dungeon up close and personal. Or maybe the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey will be more to your taste. Although most definitely a relic of earlier times, the Abbey grounds are also a great place to have a picnic if weather permits.

If you find that the weather turns sour on you, there is always the York Castle Museum to explore, as well as the Yorkshire Museum. For great views of York and the surrounding countryside those with a head for heights might like to visit Clifford’s Tower. This tower was originally built by William the Conqueror and stands in the center of the town.

Or maybe you would prefer to take a walking tour through York. In which case, you might want to try your hand at going through the maze of narrow alleyways and streets (oddly referred to as ‘Snickelways’), threading through York and dating back from medieval times. Or maybe even take a walk through the medieval ramparts to get great views of York itself.

One very interesting thing you should put on your itinerary when in York is to take a walk through the York Maze. Owing to the fact that this maze is in fact made entirely of Maize, this attraction is only available to explore during the summer months. However, it is well worth a visit as it has been touted as being the world’s largest maze.

Regardless of the veracity of this fact, there is no denying that it is indeed a very large maze and if this is the sort of thing you are interested in it is definitely something you will want to try. Of course, you might want to leave a few hours free on your itinerary to actually find your way through the maze, but if time and children do not permit this luxury, there is always the alternative in the form a mini-maze (good for children).

Although York might not be on everybody’s list as a place they simply must see during their lifetime, it cannot be denied that there are a number of attractions in York which makes it worth your while to visit. So go on, if you have the chance to, take a small stopover and visit York. You won’t be disappointed.
